We’ve got you covered with information on what to look for in a good inflatable paddle board if you’re a beginner.
Stand-up paddleboarding is a brilliant mindful sport. It is a lovely way to admire the scenery and you’ll also be able to see down into the water easier, so it’s great for wildlife spotting too. There are lots of dedicated watersports centres throughout the UK that you can rent a stand up paddle board and take part in a taster session or beginners session. They’re popping up everywhere with spots in most coastal resorts, but also inland lakes and waterways. However, if you want to head out whenever you feel like it we have chosen a selection of the best inflatable paddle boards for beginners to get you started.
Best inflatable paddle boards for beginners
If you live close to water or have a large car or campervan then a solidly constructed paddle board is a great choice as they are hardy, and they do perform better overall in the water. However, if you don’t live close to the water and don’t have much storage then an inflatable paddle board is a great option. As a beginner, I like inflatable paddle boards because they weigh less for me which makes them easier to lift, carry and move around.
First of all the most important thing when buying a beginner paddle board is to get one you can stand up on and balance easily on. In general, this means you want to look for a wider paddle board with at least a 6″ thickness. This extra height will lift the board higher out the water and enable you to inflate it to a higher PSI. This will make the board feel more firm, sturdy, and easier overall to stand up on.
When making a purchase you need to ensure the board can support your weight and on most boards, there’s normally a weight limit indicator for this. Wider boards are more stable for beginners but they are also slower in the water, longer boards are not as easy to manoeuvre but they are more buoyant. To start out, you’ll be looking for either an all-rounder or a touring-style paddle board depending on how far you want to travel, but either should be relatively stable and easy to learn the basics on.
