Explore the Wirral
The Wirral Way is an ideal place to start; it’s a path on an old railway track. It is 12 miles long and stretches from West Kirby to Hooton, offering spectacular views over the Dee Estuary. It’s flat and accessible; you can choose sections of it to tailor a walk to suit you. Away from roads, it’s perfect for cycling and days out with children.
If it’s water sports you are after; West Kirby is a great option. The marine lake here is such a peaceful place to visit. We love an afternoon walk around the path between the beach and the lake watching people sail by. You can participate in one of the many water sports allowed on the lake. Or book a time slot and take your own equipment. We book a time online and take our paddle boards here regularly. The lake is easy to access, it’s safe for beginners, and there is plenty of nearby parking.
West Kirby also has a beautiful beach that is easy to access. From this beach, you can walk to Hilbre Island, one of Wirral’s highlights. Some of our best childhood memories are walking to this island for the day to spot seals. So if you love nature and wildlife spotting, this is a great location to visit. The islands are an archipelago; they are classed as one of 43 unbridged tidal islands in the UK that you can reach on foot. Make sure to check the tide times before visiting. Tide tables can be found online, and they are displayed at the Dee Lane slipway. New Brighton in Wirral is perfect for a day trip. The location benefited from a £60 million redevelopment scheme and features a theatre, a cinema, a hotel, restaurants, adventure golf, bowling, laser quest and arcades. It is popular for families to visit and enjoy traditional seaside fun. These are the days out you remember from childhood!
There are plenty of ways to get children outdoors in Wirral, too; there are forest schools and beach schools to join in, water sport clubs, beaches to enjoy for the day, farms, corn mazes and beautiful parks to explore. And if you fancy visiting the city for the day, jump on a train, bus or a ferry across the Mersey! The River Explorer Cruise is a 50-minute cruise on the River Mersey, where you can enjoy the view of the Liverpool waterfront.
