Gas fire pit safety tips
Gas fire pits and fire tables are very safe products to own when used correctly. Here are some tips to ensure you use your fire pit safely.
- Always ensure you are using the correct gas for your fire pit. Most of the fire pits listed in this article will use a propane gas bottle (usually a 5kg camping gas bottle), the same as used in many gas BBQ’s and patio heaters. Please ensure you check the instructions included in your fire pit to ensure you buy the correct sized gas bottle for your fire pit.
- Never place your gas bottle too close to your naked flame. Gas bottles do not like to get hot. Never place your gas bottle too close to your fire pit when it is hot. Some fire pit designs allow the gas bottle to be placed inside the firepit so they are not on display. This is perfectly safe, as long as you ensure the gas bottle is the correct size and not too close to the heat guard below the flame. Never exceed the recommended sized gas bottle for your chosen fire pit.
- When you first fire up your gas fire pit, it is good practice to let the lava rocks or glass heat up for 10-15 minutes before you sit around and enjoy your fire pit. This ensures that no lava rocks or glass split and shoot out of the fire pit when they are warming up.
- Always disconnect your gas bottle once the fire pit has cooled down. Never leave your gas bottle connected to your fire pit when it is not in use.
- Ensure the lava rocks or glass is completely cool before touching them after use. They can stay hot for a long time after your fire pit has been turned off.
- Most fire pits will come with a protective waterproof cover. Ensure your fire pit is completely cool and cover it when not in use.
